Correspondence, letterbooks, writings and essays, legal briefs, billheads, advertising, receipts, and land deeds, 1809-1933. The bulk of the collection consists of Noble C. Butler's correspondence and letterbooks, mostly dealing with legal matters. A few letters deal with his children's education. There are also his writings and essays, billheads from businesses in Indianapolis and New Albany, Ind., and advertising from L.S. Ayres & Co. in Indianapolis. Two boxes contain the papers of John H. Butler and are mainly receipts. The correspondence of Walter Q. Gresham, mainly to Noble C. Butler, is in two boxes and discusses political matters, including Gresham's opposition to Blaine and Harrison and the annexation of Hawaii. The oversize items are mainly land deeds. The bound volumes deal mainly with the Butler legal firm and Noble Butler's work in various courts.
